In 2013, then 13-year-old Trisha Prabhu of Naperville, IL saw a problem with social media apps and decided to fix it. After reading an all to common and heartbreaking story of a teen suicide, she decided she wanted to help young people make wiser decisions online—and to stop cyber bullying messages from ever being sent. She created ReThink, a browser extension that asks users to rethink potentially harmful messages before they post them.
Immediately after Trisha read the article about an 11 year-old girl committing suicide after being bullied online, she decided to do some research. She learned that while social media sites are pursuing methods to try to curb cyberbullying, none of them seem to be effective. Trisha has been quoted saying, “Social media sites like to try what I call “Stop, Block, and Tell.” They encourage adolescents to stop what they’re doing, block the cyberbully, and tell a parent or guardian. It sounds like a really great method, but the problem is that 9 out of 10 times, adolescents don’t tell anyone that they’re being cyberbullied. So what you end up with are these kids who spiral downward into depression, low self-esteem, and eventually suicidal tendencies. It’s a horrible cycle, and I realized I needed an effective solution to try and curb this. That’s where ReThink was born.”
The Rethink app is unique in that it puts the responsibility into the hands of the user. Not the users parents or the victim of the cyberbully.
Here is a description of the ReThink app, according to their website:
What is ReThink?
ReThink™ is an award-winning, non-intrusive, innovative, patented technology, that detects and stops cyberbullying before the damage is done! Here is a quick overview of how ReThink works:
- Teen tries to post offensive message
- ReThink technology detects offensive message
- Second chance to ReThink with an alert
- Teen declines to post offensive message
- Online hate is stopped. Lives are saved!
Research shows that when adolescents are alerted to “ReThink” their decision, they change their minds 93% of the time. Using ReThink™, the overall willingness of an adolescent to post an offensive message reduced from 71% to 4%.
Project B3 LOVES this app- because it stops hate and bullying at the source. It teaches kids and teens how navigate the internet and social media in real-time. It gives them a moment to stop, think and decide if what they are typing is actually what they really want to communicate. Too often, kids and teens send and post words and messages that they later regret. This app has the potential for so much good.
And- let’s be honest- we know a lot of adults who could benefit from downloading this app!
